Why I Hate September

I hate September because it is in September that I finally get my mobile phone bill from GUADEC.

Total of 5 Calls while abroad 00:23:20 £31.402

Money grabbing tight fisted evil bastards. This includes a rate of £1.25 a minute to receive a call.

Crikey. For a minute there I read that as a european style thousands separator instead of a decimal point.

But can't you pay it off with all that Intel money now?

You might be interested in Sim4Travel, which I've been using since a few weeks ago and am pretty happy with. You get a british mobile number and you can receive calls for free in Europe and calling (also in Europe) costs 25p per minute.
It's certainly more expensive than a local phone but this way you get to have one number for all of Europe.
Actually making calls can be a bit of a pain, as what you do is attempt to call, fail and receive a call which connects you to the number you wanted to dial. Other than that it's a pretty decent service.

Don't be shy - which money-grubbing bastards is your phone with?

Oh, this is Vodafone.

You might like Rebtel - you register for a foreign number when you call, and when someone calls you, they call a local number. So when you were in Turkey, you would have had a UK number which would get to your cellphone, but the call to your cell would be from a Turkish number. Similarly, if you want to call people in the UK, you get a Turkish number to call, and they get a call from a local UK number. All hokus pokus to me, but tailor made for international cellphone stuff.

Last time I was on a U.K. provider the most ridiculous thing was SMS. They charged a quid a time to send or receive an SMS when abroad. Because, y'know, sure, it costs that much to send 132 bytes over the Series O' Tubes.

one might take it as an argumet why Turkey should be accepted to the EU - they cannot charge you more than 0,5€/minute nowadays, and even that is too much.

Vodafone have a variety of packages. I minimized my pain when travelling by setting their passport/travel option and then trying to manually select the local operator they actually had an peering agreement with. They even had a special offer in August (which they texted me about ad nauseam) which meant I got my foreign calls for the same price as at home ... which would have been good if I wasn't on the text often don't call plan where my calls cost 79c a minute.
