One Railway

This week the rail operator where I live, WAGN, was taken over by One Railway. WAGN was an amusing name in a way, and One is going for the "unity" they are bringing by merging several different train operators in the area (maybe it wasn't a good idea to sell the train network, Maggie) but I am waiting for the jokes about what exactly there is "one" of. One train? Just the One driver? One safety inspector? Only One wrench for the engineers? All seem possible at times...

NASA has a tradition, the "wakeup song" they use to tell the astronauts to rise and shine.

Back in the day, on the shuttle mission on which Sally Ride became our first U.S. female astronaut, they awoke the crew one morning with Wilson Pickett:

"All you wanna do is ride around, Sally - ride, Sally Ride."

I think about her every time I hear that song. Life offers few better true living puns.

John -- I bet the poor girl was thinking "oh no, not again" when it started playing. :)

And oh dear - the ONE livery is rather, um... striking isn't it?

At least until the next timetable change, ONE appears to be smoke and mirrors - four different train systems with their own tickets and services, apart from special events. Even though NXGroup run nearly all the trains in the East Anglia region now, we still don't have a rover ticket that lets you cover all of Norfolk, for example. There's no competition but no integration.

The rainbow livery reminds me of the LGB soc at uni...

Apparently, announcing "the eight-twenty one West Anglia service" is confusing, so they're dropping the "one" name. See my blog entry (linked from my name) for more.
