UI Design Lessons

Mikael discovered the user interface gem which is MLDonkey, and suggests that we learn a thing or two from it. I agree, and hunted around for more prime examples of UI design lessons we should learn from. Especially for Mikael, I found a Windows Jabber client called Exodus. This is the connect dialog:

Exodus Connect dialog

A beginner will notice that the terminating button layout is clearer as OK | Cancel rather than Cancel | Connect we'd normally use. However, a closer look reveals finer details than we are used to. The Details button opens a dialog to edit the current profile, and the blue underlined label is not a web link but a pop-up menu to create new accounts. Finally, successful integration of the web and the destktop is here!

Can we start up a website or something where we can post examples of quality UI design like that? It could be a mecca for both experience software designers and beginners alike.

Link -- http://www.rha.com/ui_hall_of_shame.htm is pretty good but rather focused on Windows software, which is as there is obviously so much potential crack-rot in Linux software.

Ross, what's "crack-rot"? :)

hmm, if I had a decent up-cap I'd set up a Wiki for this project. Whatever MLDonkey GUI that was... wow, that's like something straight out of the B.O.B. living room. We need more of this. I can think of a few examples already.
