The SynCh

Yesterday I plugged my SynCh into a wall socket and charged my Nokia 6230i. Then I charged an iPod Nano. This morning I plugged my SynCh into my laptop and charged up my Nokia 770. I'm loving my SynCh!

Basically The SynCh is a extendable charger and USB hub, with a USB plug at one end for plugging into a laptop, and a custom power socket and USB socket on the other. Into one of those you can plug a number of adaptors: I have a mini-USB plug for data transfer, a Nokia old-style charger, a Sony PSP charger (for the Zaurus), and an iPod charger. I also have the travel adaptor, which lets me plug the SynCh into UK, EU or US sockets for charging from the mains.

It's pretty cool, and I recommend that anyone who ends up taking seven chargers away with them look at getting one. It's also a lot cheaper than the iGo! My only problem is that the iPod charger won't charge my 3G iPod, but handles 4G and newer fine. Apple must have done something odd...

Wow, this look nice.

Could you post a photo with several devices plugged in, so everybody could realise how to use it ?

Have a device which can charge two devices at once (phone/multimedia computer, internet tablet, portable music player, as well as your laptop) and I'm there.

The problem with the iPod G3 is that its FireWire based, with the option of a USB cable (which doesn't charge it). It requires input through the firewire pins to charge and I think the voltage or ampage of firewire vs usb is slightly different too.

Daniel, that would be the top-end iGo.  Its about a foot long and costs over 100 Euros, IIRC.  I can live with a 4-inch wire for all mobile devices and a separate laptop charger, as together they are smaller than the iGo.

Did you get the attachment for your EOS 20D also? They seem to have one for the EOS Digital Rebel XT but I didn't know there was any way to charge that except to use the external battery charger.

Hamish: Yes, I wondered about that.  I wondered so much that I emailed them to find out (I though it might possibly be a cable that plugs into the external charger to avoid taking a mains lead).  It turns out that the shop contains both power leads and data leads (Nokia phones are power only leads for example, iPod is power and data), and the 20D lead is a data lead only.  In other words, its a USB to mini-USB adaptor, so you can use the SynCh as a USB hub and connect the camera to your computer.
