Xrandr, postscript

If anyone out there has been using my Edgy packages for the new Xrandr love, then you'll notice that I've just deleted them...

Daniel Stone, X hacker extraordinaire, has built updated packages. As he can actually use git I trust them more than I trust my own. They may blow up your machine and so on, but they are available here:

deb http://www.fooishbar.org/packages/ randr-1.2/edgy/$(ARCH)/

He also kindly built AMD64 debs, something that I cannot do.

Hi Ross,

I just installed Daniel's xrandr packages and they don't seem to as you pointed in your previous blog. If I typ

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 800
default connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
  1280x800  60.0*
  1024x768  60.0

No VGA output is listed :-(, but the version seems to be correct:

$ xrandr -v
Server reports RandR version 1.2

Do you know if both packages (your's and Daniel's) the same version? thanks!

Forget my last comment, silly me I forgot to install the xserver-xorg-video-intel package! :-)

Now xrandr 1.2 works and reports successfully VGA connected or not, I can also change between the external monitor output at 1440x900 and the laptop at 1280x800 but the screen on the external monitor looks distorted and cannot be adjusted :-(

It seems as the resolution of the external monitor is detected correctly but something is wrong with the VGA adjustments, i've tried different modelines but no help there... i don't know if its the i810 driver fault (I'm using a 945GM) or xrandr-1.2 though...

Anyone knows if there is a place I can report problems with this software? it may help the developers...

xorg-list at freedesktop.org, or the bug system at freedesktop.org.

Thanks, I'll try to report my problems over there...

Thanks for the tip and the packages. It works very well with metacity but perhaps could you add a warning for beryl users using the edgy packages (as found on ubuntu.beryl-project.org) : it triggers the « white screen » bug (due to strange interactions with mesa/glproto versions, see  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9456).

I would love to find a how-to for getting a dual desktop experience using Linux with this latest software.  I hear that randr1.2 can provide a xinerama-like experience, but I can't find anywhere that some explains how.
