mDNS Resolver

Mike Hearn yesterday pointed me at someone who was planning on writing mDNS support for glibc, probably as a NSS provider. In hindsight that is blatantly the right thing to do, so I mailed him to see if he wanted someone to help test it. When he replied he told me that Apple had added a mDNS NSS provider to their implementation a few days ago. And what do you know, it works. The NSS library only works I run their mdnsd, so I'll have to dig around to see if this can be changed.

Please post a follow up about what you discover. I have been following the developments in link local multicast name resolution (LLMNR), as it is called in IETF circles, for a while. I really want to see glibc support it, and service discovery (DNS-SD), as well.

Hi Ross,

the good list to discuss about mDNS implementation could be this one:

http://lists.porchdogsoft.com/pipermail/howl-users/2004-July/000297.html

(Howl, open source implementation for Zeroconf)

I'd be happy to test with all of you the features of an NSS plugin for my Linux resolver :)

Have already a mDNSResponder in the rc.local of all my machines, but did not manage to "ping " a local address.

Tried nameserver 224.0.0.251 without success, in combination with "search .local" ... glibc-2.3.3-32

Saw somewhere a procedure to have bind as a forwarder for the .local zone on port 5353, but could not find it anymore :-(

Saw that Gaim has a Rendez Vous support, but don't know yet what to do nor how can it be compiled and used ...

Rendez Vous people, let's gather and fight for a new an easy networking area !

Kalou
