Gypsy Packages

So now that Iain has finally released his baby to the world, I should release my Debian packages too. Now, they work for me, but there is a huge disclaimer around them. gypsy-daemon runs as root. I plan on fixing this shortly and it should be fairly simple, but I wanted to get these packages out there for early testers quickly. Brave Debian Sid and Ubuntu Feisty users can grab them from my repository. Gutsy users who moan about me not building packages and can't rebuild them on their own are not hardcore enough for this, so don't bother asking.

If you set up a PPA on Launchpad, you could get the package built on multiple Ubuntu versions and architectures.

Yeah, I was wondering how long it would be for someone to mention that. :)

So gypsy is basically gpsd-over-dbus?  Does exactly what gpsd does, just offers a more pleasant interface?
Posted by Ross at Mon Nov 12 20:00:08 2007:
Its an all-new implementation of a GPS multiplexing daemon, fixing all of the design decisions in gpsd which are moronic, basically.

Overall, it looks pretty nice (armchair research thus far) - one thing that was kind of a nice side effect of gpsd was the ntpd interface.  Are there any plans to add a 'GypsyTime' interface?  I mean assuming it wouldn't always be a half hour late -  'Gypsy Time' has an entirely different meaning as a colloquialism....

Only other concern is how much effort it will take to port existing apps, and whether (for backwards compatability) they will need to support gpsd too... meh - progress :)

You'll have to ask Iain about exposing the timestamps as a time source.  I have been wondering about a libgps compatibility layer, but considering only a few projects actually use libgps and instead generally talk directly to the GPS, this would be quite an effort.

libgps is a steaming pile of poo that is broken in so so many ways, and it would be impossible to provide a compatibility layer for it.

i never understood why gpsd came with the ntpd interface. can it not be a seperate project built on top of gypsy? Is there something you need from the time more than the unixtime timestamps that the signals carry?

Bug 660 at bugzilla.openedhand.com opened for GypsyTime.

Ah, I understand the requirements for the time thing now. I'll add a GypsyTime interface that emits the timestamp as it changes. Someone else can make a program that listens to that and feeds it into the ntpd.
