Gizmo Project

There are many "Skype-killers" out there at the moment, but until GoogleTalk has a Linux client for it's VOIP service the best of the bunch appears to be the Gizmo Project. It uses SIP, an open standard unlike Skype, and they just started shipping a Linux client (albeit in beta form). Even better news is that it appears that the source for the client will be available shortly, and it uses GTK+ 2.

It also has a dependency on Apple's Bonjour, so I guess it will automatically find other Gizmo Project users on the local network. If the client will connect to a local server, then that is a really nice it-just-works implementation of VOIP for internal office calls.

Skype for OS X version also have Apple Bonjour support, FYI :)

The real feature most of these apps miss is "install and use behind NAT without configuration"! Two Skype users can phone even if both are behind NAT, without  port forwarding, if you use SIP/RTP softphones, you need to explain all your friends how they can do this etc.
IMHO, not having to do port forwarding is the most important feature for such apps.

The original - Run Come Save Me is much much better, I guess I don't get the whole dub thing.

Oh, I didn't read that it will publish source. It is just great. I checked their website some three four months ago and now - they have managed their visual appeal look good and different from Skype, which is good.

Well, another good looking, slick, very useful app is coming to our desktops. Let's welcome it.

Ross,

Why to rely on or expect for an application of with
dubious beahviour (http://www.voipuser.org/forum_topic_2567.html),
whose creator maybe will release the source code and
that provides an apllication when you can have
perfectly Free Software with the same functionality today?.

Use and advocate software like KCall (http://www.basyskom.de/index.pl/kcall), KPhone (http://www.wirlab.net/kphone/), Linphone (http://www.linphone.org/?lang=us&rubrique=1),
or the WIP of GnomeMeeeting2 (http://blog.gnomemeeting.net/index.php?p=18, Debian packages at http://snapshots.seconix.com/) (in no specific order, no one has Bonjour support, but GnomeMeeting 2 looks promising).

Cramm: as I'm a GNOME developer and the blog posting was aimed at Planet GNOME, I thought it was obvious that my posting was a pointer towards a commercial use of GTK+ which is likely to make a large impact in the VOIP area used by normal people and companies who want support and the knowledge that the only developer isn't going to get bored, not a "use this it's cool" post.

I've been patiently waiting for Gnomemeeting 2 ever since Damien first mentioned that he was working on SIP support.

Ross:

I saw your post a Planet Debian and nothing in
your post suggested your intention, perhaps it's
just I don't have the English skills (as it is
obvious when one reads my post) necessary to catch
that kind of subtle message. Sorry.

Ross would you like a picture of Gizmo to go with your project?

Ross: Do you only have like 10 different CDs?
Posted by Ross at Thu Sep 15 15:55:25 2005:
Iain: no, but I do tend to play the ones I like to work to a lot.  I've got ~330 CDs.
